Overview

If you ever wished you could use your laptop hands-free, your wish is about to come true. Due to the new Tobii Technology, it may soon be possible to use laptops without using the mouse. Tobii Technology allows people to use their laptop with their eyes. While the technology is not available to the public yet, the company expects it will be in a few years.

According to PCMAG.com, Tobii Technology joined the computer company, Lenovo, to put this new sensory technology into a normal laptop. PCMAG.com describes the technology as using “infrared lights to track ‘corneal reflection,’ or the glint off of the eye.” The way it works is through two sensors blinking so fast that they are impossible to see with the naked eye. The sensors then detect the eye movement and determine where they are looking on the laptop’s screen. Your eyes become the mouse. Using the technology, it is possible to scroll through documents, play games, look through photos, zoom in on a page, and more. It also allows users to have settings for all of this, meaning how fast the computer does these tasks. For example, how fast the page zooms in on an object, or how fast the computer scrolls through a document, can all be preset by the user. The goal of the technology is to make using a computer with our eyes fast and simple.

PCMAG.com recently released a video of the technology being used. While it seems like it may take some time to get used to, it appears to work well and accurately. As PCMAG.com describes, there are still a few glitches in the program, but they should be fixed within the next few years. This new program is definitely taking technology to the next level. It will be interesting to see how it will affect the way people use their laptop in the future.
